Saturday Matinee – Ruby Dee & The Snakehandlers, The Black Keys, Janiva Magness, and Ry Cooder w/ Buckwheat Zydeco & Lenny Kravitz

Ruby Dee & The Snakehandlers “plays an Americana that encompasses Texas honky-tonk, Bakersfield twang, Memphis rockabilly, Western swing and good old-fashioned rock’n’ roll.” This song doesn’t really fit any of those categories, but it’s nice and easy.

Saturday Matinee – The Courettes, Mr. Sipp & Ry Cooder

Dubbed The World’s Greatest Two Person Rock ‘N’ Roll Ensemble, Flavia & Martin Couri, aka The Fabulous Courettes, are proof that Phil Spector lives.

Castro Coleman, aka Mr. Sipp is smooth. A recipient of many prestigious awards, Castro was the first bluesman to have his handprint inducted into the Wall of Fame in Fredrikshavn, Denmark.

The master of roots blues slide guitar, Ry Cooder gets all swampy whenever he wants to, and that’s fine with me. Mo swampy mo betta.

Yep, another week has gone by and I don’t miss it already. See you back here tomorrow at whenever o’clock sharp.

Saturday Matinee – Sam Butera & The Witnesses, Ry Cooder, and Miles Davis w/ Robben Ford & Bob Berg

Sam Butera & The Witnesses (1964).

Written by Doc Pomus and Mort Shuman, Elvis scored a hit in 1961 with Little Sister in 1961, but Ry Cooder‘s 1982 version is my favorite.

New Blues, Miles Davis w/ Robben Ford & Bob Berg (1986).
Don’t be fooled -it starts out slow then sneaks up behind you and kicks you in the head. Ford steps in at about 3:00.

Ry Cooder, one of the greatest slide guitar players ever, paid tribute to Mooney in 2018.

Yeah. That’s the great Taj Mahal with the great Ry Cooder covering the great Blind Willie McTell‘s great 1928 recording of Statesboro Blues in Nashville Tennessee, September, 2014.

The Allman Brothers covered the same great song.

Speaking of jamming, the great Buddy Guy still does it better than most.

Frank Zappa conducted Ravel’s Bolero, one of the most boring compositions ever, but added a Reggae beat. Why not?

The Cadillac Three make some fun noise. Never met ’em, but I grew up with some just like ’em. Good people.

Holy crap! Look at the lineup of that John Lee Hooker backup band!
