Tunes for All Hallow’s Eve

Songs in this collection may or may not be directly related to Halloween, and it’s probably the first Halloween play list without Monster Mash.

Saturday Matinee – The Romain Vuillemin Quartet, Samantha Fish & Albert Castiglia

The Romain Vuillemin Quartet covers Django Reinhardt in fine Hot Club fashion, and it’s perfect road trip at sunrise music.

Samantha Fish recorded her take on Ronnie Love’s 1961 original, and it works.

Florida slidewinder Albert Castiglia is vicious in an Elmore James meets Negan Smith kind of way.

Been quite the good news / bad news week around here lately, so we mixed them both together and came up with tolerable.
Porch.
Tomorrow.
Be there.

Saturday Matinee – Marcin Patrzalek, Ronnie Wood, and Samantha Fish w/ Jesse Dayton

Polish guitar savant Marcin Patrzalek‘s skills are astounding, combining Spanish flamenco with finger style. Much of his repertoire appears to be classical; this version of Bart Howard’s In Other Words (1954) is a bit lighter.

The 1987 concert was recorded and released the following year as Live At The Ritz. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. “Where’s Bo?” It’s not a Utoobage typo – Bo Diddley shared the stage with Ronnie Wood but sat out this song.

Samantha Fish meets Jesse Dayton – Rockabilly happens with their cover of Brand New Cadillac (Vince Taylor & His Playboys, 1959). Too bad the bass isn’t heavier, but then the Cadillac would belong to Peter Gunn.

Looks like a weekend is happening, so have a great one and we’ll deal with stuff tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – The Crow, Samantha Fish & Unknown Hinson

The Crow (2022) is a film  short created by Glenn Marshall Neural Art.

In December 2017 Samantha Fish ripped into the classic Crow Jane.
“Its roots lay in the Piedmont region of Virginia and North and South Carolina. Rev. Gary Davis was known to perform it during the 1920’s, and the first recording was made in 1927 by guitarist Julius Daniels.”
Not sure what Crow Jane did to deserve being killed.

“Here come the dayum train, Bebeh!” – Unknown Hinson

Guess that’ll do for now.  Have a great weekend despite what they tell you, and tomorrow we’re gonna do stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Samantha Fish, Shovels & Rope & The Marcus King Band

Samantha Fish has been playing her cover of the Barbara Lewis’ classic for a while, but I  just heard it for the first time today. There are more recent versions on the Utoobage, but I like this one the best. [h/t lobo91]

It starts out slow then throws you face down in the mud. Husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst tour forever as Shovels & Rope.

The Marcus King Band  hails from Greenville, South Carolina. A fourth-generation musician, Marcus King started learning guitar at age three or four and has played professionally since he was 11. It shows.

Amazing how the weekends seem to go back to back these days… at least for me. Have a great one – howl at the moon, bark at the sunrise, laugh at life, and we’ll see you soon.

Saturday Matinee – Mr. Snuggles, Stan Ridgway, Reese Malone & Kelsi Kee, & Samantha Fish

Goodbye Mr. Snuggles. (Impressive credits roll, too.)

Stan Ridgway and Wall of Voodoo were unusual for the time. They weren’t prolific, but I liked what they did.

Filmed & Recorded on May 4, 2019 at the Dallas International Guitar Festival

Red House is pure awesome, but I can’t find a direct link to the band.
Kelsi Kee – Vocals
Reece Malone – Guitar
Ally Venable – Guitar
Anthony Cullins – Guitar
Danny Ross – Keys
Mike Gage – Drums
Aram Doroff – Bass

Holy crap. I just found this. So heavy and nasty.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more awesome.

Saturday Matinee – Hahn Beer, Ten Years After, Samantha Fish & Justin Johnson

Here’s another.

Okay, I think I see a pattern. Here’s one more.

Okay, I’ll stop, but not before I link to this Danier Leather commercial.

Alvin Lee & Ten Years After‘s “I’m Going Home” is one of the greatest speed metal rock tribute songs ever, and this live version dates to 1969 – Woodstock. TYA had only one Top 40 hit.

How ’bout some Samantha Fish?

Definitely dangerous. Hand her something with four wires nailed to it and she’ll jam it down your throat. I want to hear what she can do with a diddley bow.

That’s Justin Johnson playing classic Son House on a custom-made glorified diddley bow.

Have a great three-day weekend folks and please remember what Memorial Day is all about. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Gene Chandler, Earth Angels & Samantha Fish with John Long

https://youtu.be/QQnfooEED8Y

Gene Chandler was still doing retro doo-wop in the early ’60s. Then there’s these guys whose cover was kinda embarrassing, but good at the same time.

Yeah, that stuff is stuff, but this stuff is better.

Sam Fish cranks it, and that hoser on her right [Jonathan Long] could barely keep up. Love it.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more fun.

Saturday Matinee – George Thorogood, The Gary Cain Band, and Samantha Fish

George Thorogood & The Destroyers Live on 19 May 2017 in Pompano Beach, Florida.

The Gary Cain Band live at The Golden Pheasant in St. Catharines, Ontario 19 December 2015.

Samantha Fish makes it look so easy, but it’s not.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle, Christopher Ameruoso, Tab Benoit & Tommy Castro with Samantha Fish

That’s Steve Gulley & New Pinnacle performing The Fiddle Player’s National Anthem in 2015(?). And yes, they got clogged by a buck dancer. “Orange Blossom Special” is probably the greatest train song ever, followed by the late Steve Goodman‘s “City of New Orleans.”

Nice 3-string electric cigar box slide git-fiddle from Christopher Ameruoso in 2015.

“Night Train” is a killer boogie jam by Tab Benoit, Tommy Castro & Samantha Fish recorded at The Birchmere, Alexandria, VA, 2014. Somewhere, John Lee Hooker is smiling.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you tomorrow.
