Saturday Matinee – Textron ARV, Malford Milligan, The Brothers Osborne w/ Darius Rucker & A Thousand Horses, and Thee Sinseers

That’s some serious Black Mirror stuff.

The Malford Milligan Band with Jeff Plankenhorn (I think) circa 2011. Can’t verify the the others.

“We had so much fun backstage during our last jam video that Darius Rucker decided he didn’t want to be left out…so we made another!” Whole buncha peeps in that one: The Brothers Osborne, Darius Rucker and A Thousand Horses. BTW, that’s a Doc Watson song.

Joey Quinones & Thee Sinseers‘ chicano R&B gets me every time. Reminds me of so many things long ago and far away. Hard to find the band lineup, but that’s Adriana Flores (of The Altons) on vocals.

Saturday Matinee – Utopia, The Nicholas Brancker Band, Bernard “Pretty” Perdie & Co., and The Cleverlys

Utopia (2019) is a short by filmmaker Kosta Nikas. A man lives in a society where citizens police each other with their mobile phones. [Found here.]

The Nicholas Brancker Band plays 60’s-70s spouge, a style that was “Barbados’ answer to ska in Jamaica and calypso in Trinidad.” I’d heard before but never knew it had a name until recently (thanks to Queen H.). Jump to 01:10 for the music.

Tighten Up (Part 1) is a cover of the classic 1968 Archie Bell & the Drells hit. Music starts at 0:40. This all-star lineup features:

As long as we’re doing covers, The Cleverlys‘ take on The Proclaimers‘ 1988 song is a good’un. A lot of the songs they cover are parodies of a sort (I expected to hear “pterodactyl” in the refrain) but they play I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles) straight… mostly.

Saturday Matinee – Orkestra Obsolete, Thee Sinseers, Kemuri & The Ghost Town Blues Band

Not much can be found about Orkestra Obsolete except that Scottish guitarist Angus McIntyre assembled the band for the BBC. The original un-colorized video was released ca. 2016 and is a cover of New Order’s 1983 electrobeat song of the same name.

Thee Sinseers have the chicano soul groove down and mix in a bit of Motown on the side. Wait’ll Joey Quiñones’ voice ages a bit and they’ll be even better.

Founded in Oxnard, California in 1995, disbanded 2007, reunited 2012, Kemuri is more to my liking these days. They released two albums back-to-back in 2015 and they’re still touring world wide.

Ignore the tacky stage decor, The Ghost Town Blues Band nails the Memphis sound of the early 70s.

“Warriors” by Too Many Zooz, shot somewhere under NYC, is oddly interesting. Some call it street music, but the band calls it “brass house.” Kinda rough on my ears, but I get it.

Tight sound with a nice groove. The Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio (aka DLO3) covers Curtis Mayfield‘s 1970 soul classic Move On Up.

The Contours‘ chart-topping 1962 hit Do You Love Me became a major hit again in 1988. I bet it scores a third time.

RT n’ the 44s has a laid back retro vibe with a large dollop of Johnny Cash. They’ve been described as “a vintage country band with dark obsessions.”

Big Sandy & His Fly-Rite Boys have been jammin’ it since 1988, and here’s their cover of Colin James‘ Jumpin’ From Six to Six.

One of the best big brass blues bands in the land is Roomful of Blues. More than 50 musicians have played in the band since its inception in 1967, and I’m not sure of this 2013 lineup.

Willy (Mink) DeVille had an unusual sound for the late ’70s scene, and Moon Martin‘s Cadillac Walk was one of my favorites. (I didn’t know that Mink DeVille was one of the original house bands at CBGB, but that explains a lot.) h/t Immortal Jukebox.

Michael Kiwanuka‘s One More Night is a cool groove with a quirky video stapled onto it. Can’t quite put my finger on what this reminds me of, but it’s a real smooth combination. Born and raised in London, Kiwanuka is the son of Ugandan parents who escaped the brutal Amin regime.

Thee Lakesiders have a good East L.A. retro vibe that kinda matches my mood lately. Let’s groove it up a bit.

St. Paul & The Broken Bones successfully channels the Stax Records sound, and my mood is improving a bit.

Taj Mahal takes a ride around town, pickin’ the classics, and I feel better.

<vent>Way too much stuff went down in meatworld this week, some very good, some pretty bad, and the latter was starting to get to me. Backing into a BMW SUV in a hospital parking lot didn’t help either – just one more damn thing to accept and deal with. Yeah, the Lord’s testing me…</vent>

Southside Johnny & the Asbury Jukes (in 1985) with their 1976 hit “I Don’t Wanna Go Home.” The missus walked in while I was watching the vid and said, “Okay, so who’s the pirate?” That’s Miami Steve Van Zandt, – he wrote the song. SJ & the AJ had a great retro sound that was all but missing in the mid ’70s.

Maceo Parker makes it funky at the North Sea Jazz Festival, Rotterdam 2012. The badass backup:
