You’ve probably never heard OF Carol Kaye, but you have certainly heard her music, especially on bass. Pure awesome.

Jaco Pastorius was brilliant on bass, but had serious mental problems.

Mercy Mercy Mercy. This jam cranks, but that can’t be  Stanley Jordan on bass (or guitar, or any other instrument) despite the Utoobage description, yet someone was playing a 6-string bass…

Yep. There’s more Rockabilly in the first 02:30 than you can shake a dead rockin’ cat at. The Stray Cats were awesome. Where do we go from here? Oh wait. I got it.

The Sadies give tribute to Big Daddy Roth and the classic “Live Fast, Die Young, Leave A Good Looking Corpse” nihilistic absurdity.

Saturday Matinee – UFO Intro, Cab Calloway with Al Morgan, & Mitch Woods with Pinetop Perkins

UFO was a 1970 British sci-fi TV series with the premise that the earth is invaded by aliens in the distant future: 1980.

From the 1933 W.C. Fields film International House, Cab Calloway‘s “Reefer Man” is some hot jumpin’ jazz featuring Al Morgan slappin’ bass.

“Mitch Woods‘ Boogie Woogie Blowout” at Yoshi’s, Oakland, CA. Nov 19, 2009. Pinetop Perkins (1913-2011) is featured. Jump to 01:30 for the music. Mr. Perkins (96 years old at the time of this recording) wanders on stage to kick ass just past 03:00. [h/t trebob]

Oddness. The 1st .gif is from an unknown TV advertisement. The 2nd is from the 1924 silent movie “Aelita: Queen of Mars.” The “Katzenclavier” dates to the 1500s long before .gif animations were invented.
