Saturday Matinee – Bovine Spring, Biergarten, Man In The Woods & James Cotton (1935-2017)

Vandaag was het weer groot feest bij boer Brandsma in Bolsward! Na 5 maanden mochten de koeien weer voor het eerst naar buiten!

Springtime in the Netherlands and the cows are released from their winter shelters (via) and THIS is definitely related.

Proof that German cattle know what a Biergarten für Rinder sounds like.

This creepy short animation was a student project from 2014 [via].

We lost J. Geils recently, but I completely missed the news of one of the greatest harmonica players I ever heard. James Cotton (aka “Mr. SuperHarp”) passed away at the age of 81 on 16 March 2017 in Austin Texas. Cotton recorded “The Creeper” in 1968. It predates Richard “Magic Dick” Salwitz‘ 1971 recording of “Whammer Jammer“, falsely accredited to “Juke Joint Jimmy”.

Here’s James Cotton at his finest, and having fun with it, too.

Have a great weekend folks, be back here tomorrow for something or other.

Saturday Matinee – Farmer Derek Klingenberg, The Fire House Five+Two & Trombone Shorty

Calling cows with a bovine ‘bone by Farmer Derek Klingenberg.

The Fire House Five (plus Two)  play “Red Hot River Valley” (1951). The band was made up of members of Disney’s animation department and were fairly successful.

Trombone Shorty on trumpet with “Hurricane Season” (2010)  This New Orleans funk jazz mix works.

That should hold you for a while. More stuff coming down the pipe, so see you tomorrow.

A Must See Holiday Movie

This has been sitting around for a while in our What To Do With Box, and although I’m sure I posted it elsewhere, it’s still in my list of top flicks to see.

It’s got everything you want in an action movie: a pretty oriental nurse with a threatening heart-stopping hypodermic needle, cows and albino goats,  snow and subtitles.  Once I find out where it’s showing, you’ll be the first to know.

Saturday Matinee – Cows & Cycles, Kim Wilson, W.C. Clark, Angela Strehli, Jimmy Vaughan, Little Walter, Coco Taylor, Howlin’ Wolf, Leon Redbone, and a link to Marion Harris

Cows & Cows & Cows. (Tip o’ the tarboosh to Bunkarina.)

If that wasn’t odd enough, try Cycles. (Thanx, Possum.)

Whoa. Whatta lineup. Kim Wilson, backed by Jimmy Vaughan and W.C.Clark with Angela Strehli. Might have posted the vid before, but so what.

Little Walter was an excellent harp player. Here he is with Coco Taylor in 1967, playing Howlin’ Wolf’s “Wang Dang Doodle.”

What was truly pitiful in the 60s was that the Brits were the ones to reintroduce American blues to Americans. (Look who introduces the great Howlin’ Wolf on this clip.)

Let’s wrap up with a healthy dose of Leon Redbone. Poor video, but a nice version of this song from 1916.

Have a great weekend, but be back here tomorrow for more fun.
