Saturday Matinee – Cleverly Brand Alpaca Products, Marion & Sobo Band, The Mustangs, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears

Digger Cleverly (frontman for the five member trio The Cleverlys) talks about his alpaca ranch.

Marion & Sobo Band does 1930s-era gypsy / Hot Club pretty well. Nice quirky video, too.

The Mustangs, is a famous western surf instrumental band from Finland. They’re so famous I can’t find anything about them.

Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears bring back the Stax/Volt soul sound without a Hammond B3 organ.

Have a great weekend, stay cool, and be where you belong. See you tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – The Dixie Hummingbirds, A1 Hundo & The Brothers Comatose

The Dixie Hummingbirds on Jubilee Showcase in 1964. James Walker on lead vocals. Formed in 1928, and with changing lineups, they have performed for over 90 years.

A1 Hundo resurrects the grooves of Booker T. & The MG’s. Hard to find anything about the band.

The Brothers Comatose did a happy doomsday song.

Gotta go, but we’ll be back tomorrow. Have a great weekend.

Macropicidal Hot Links

Swinging Mama, Tiny Grimes (1974)Guitarist Lloyd “Tiny” Grimes (1916-1989) played with many jazz notables. In the late 1940s he had a hit on a jazzed-up version of Loch Lomond with the band billed as Tiny “Mac” Grimes and the Rocking Highlanders. They wore kilts and included Red Prysock on tenor sax and singer Screaming Jay Hawkins.

Saturday Matinee – Johnny Blues Cárdenasis, Percy Wiggins & The Bo-Keys, & Wycliffe Gordon’s Big Band

Johnny  “Johnny Blues” Cárdenasis is a blind self-taught street  musician from Santiago, Chile, who plays nothing but roots blues. There are  interviews with him on the Utoobage, but they lack captions and my Spanish is rusty.

The Bo-Keys featuring soul gospel singer Percy Wiggins.

Big band speed skat courtesy Wycliffe Gordon. The video comments section is an eyeroller.

Ran out of time for this edition – too much real life bouncing in my noggin. See you tomorrow when things cool down a tad.

Saturday Matinee – Elysian Fields, Bombskare, Steve Karla / Leo Johnson & Mike Zito

Very nice animation of Elysian FieldsAlms For Your Love. (Ignore the “You Can’t Watch It From This Link” garbage. Just click it.)

Bombskare did some a capella whoopin’ on Rory McLeod‘s Love Like A Rock.

Steve Karla & Leo Johnson (of SpaceHeaters) go street busking Django style.

Long intro, but song starts at about 0:2:10. Mike Zito from August 2018.

Looks like some of you are in for some global cooling this weekend. If your house seems chilly, just step outside for five minutes and come back in – it’ll warm the house up good. Hunker down, and we’ll thaw out something fun for tomorrow.

Fimicolous Hot Links

Marie, The Four Tunes (1953)The Four Tunes originated from The Brown Dots, a quartet started in New York City by Ivory “Deek” Watson  after he split from the Ink Spots in late 1944. Marie was written by Irving Berlin and first recorded by Nat Shilkret & the RCA Victor Orchestra (as The Troubadors) in 1928.

Saturday Matinee – Compact Living, Andrea Motis & Joan Chamorro, Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, and Die Häder Bänd w/ Linda Krieg

The tenants’ reviews are interesting [via].

Andrea Motis & Joan Chamorro.

Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings did a great cover of Gregg Allman’s Midnight Rider (even though it’s a commercial). Sharon Jones succumbed to pancreatic cancer in 2016 at the age of 60.

Acclaimed German blues group Die Häder Bänd covers Memphis Minnie. Can’t find the lineup, but that’s Linda Krieg is on vocals and harp.

Don’t know what happened, but I lost a day this week and missed the .Gif Friday Post. Maybe it’s because I got mask-shamed by a dwarf. Again.

Meanwhile have a great weekend and we’ll go on a link binge tomorrow.

New Year’s Dayyum Saturday Matinee – Psy, Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators, Carl Verheyen & The Royal Scots Dragoon Guards

New Year’s Rockin’ Eve in Times Square NYE 2013. Yeah. Psy did that.
Gangnam Style was the first-ever video on the Utoobage to surpass 1 billion views.

New Year’s Blues
Glenn Crytzer and his Syncopators do the Jazz Age thang with

Some killer riffs in Carl Verheyen‘s New Year’s Day.

Here’s something a bit more traditional, and if your brain done got all swolled  up from last night’s festivities, maybe just an .mp3 will do:

Auld Lang Syne, Royal Scots Dragoon Guards 2010

Wishing all of you a healthy and prosperous New Year.
As for 2021, let’s just not do that again.

Saturday Matinee Christmas – Jason D. Williams, The Petersens, and Leon Redbone w/ Ken Peplowski & Dr. John

Jason D. Williams is a madman on the ivories, and the video was posted on the Utoobage just a few days ago.

The PetersensSleigh Ride [2:31] is a fun take on one of my favorites.

“Listen to how perfect this is…
The Doctor, Leon, and the heir to Benny Goodman…”

Leon Redbone, Dr. John and Ken Peplowski make a great trio, and Leon spelled backwards is, well, you know.

Have a great pre-holiday weekend, be back here tomorrow for some last minute shopping.

Saturday Matinee – Andrey Bakhurin, Haruka Kikuchi /w Stephen Walker & Michael Nesmith

Just rediscovered this 2008 Russian compilation of animations done with Post-It Notes (by Andrey Bakhurin).

“Welcome to ‘Trombone Talk’ and today’s guest is Stephen Walker (I call him Steve). He is one of my old friend since I’ve been here, we used to hang around at the YUKI Izakaya on Frenchmen Street (they closed down in October 2016), and yes, great Trombone player.”

Haruka Kikuchi has earned the title of Queen of the Tailgate Trombone.

One of the prettiest songs ever written.
R.I.P. Michael Nesmith.

Hope y’all have a great weekend and we’ll be here all day tomorrow.
