Saturday Matinee – Jeremiah McDonald does Dizzy & Charlie, The Red Devils, Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King, and The Homemade Jamz Blues Band

The Red Devils were a house band from L.A. featuring front man Lester Butler. They had much success after their debut album King King (1992), but the stress of their U.S. and European tours took its toll, and Butler’s drug habit didn’t help. They split up in 1994; Butler died of an overdose four years later at the age of 38.

Smokin’ Joe Kubek & Bnois King played together for decades until Kubek passed away in 2015 at age 58. Both Kubek and King have impressive resumes filled with blues cred.

From Tupelo, Mississippi, siblings Ryan, Kyle and Taya Perry are The Homemade Jamz Blues Band. In 2007, the trio made music history as the youngest blues band to sign a record deal: Ryan was 16, Kyle 14 and Taya 9.

Guitar great Jimmie Vaughan is still pickin’ the blues at 72.
At 04:12 he says it’s an Eddie Taylor song, but a 1952 Meteor Records 78rpm issue credits Elmore James & James Taub as the writers.

Saturday Matinee – Bill Plympton’s Boney D, Elise LeGrow & Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra

Boney D. (1996) by Bill Plympton & Jonathan Lee . Better than computer animation, and Plymptoons always made me smile.

Elise LeGrow‘s unusual take on Fontella Bass’ 1965 hit Rescue Me is sultry and sleazy, yet still respectful to the original.

Boogie woogie master Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra head over to Fat Freddie’s Place. Don’t know who the soloists are in this lineup, but that trumpet player melts it.

“For years the rumor was that Hen Gates and His Gaters were in fact the Dizzy Gillespie band. In fact Hen Gates is Freddie Mitchell and the tracks on the album credited to them, Lets All Dance To Rock And Roll, are simply old Derby masters given new titles. When Derby filed for bankruptcy in 1954, Freddie Mitchell masters had been sold cheaply and had already been reissued on several labels before they turned up on Masterseal who thought they could pull a fast one and pass them off as tracks recorded by Hen Gates and His Gators who, according to the LP sleevenotes, were ‘a group of talented young Rock ‘N Roll musicians.’ ” [Source]

Sadeck Waff, Oxandre Peckeu et 126 performers professionnels et amateurs. Remerciements à la Neodance Academy et leurs équipes pour le casting et la gestion des danseurs.

A clip from their 1931 short film Nine O’Clock Folks, The Mound City Blue Blowers featured Red McKenzie (kazoo), Jack Bland (Vega guitar) and Frank “Josh” Billings on suitcase. YouTube video description includes Eddie Condon, but I think that’s Eddie Lang on guitar. The movie title referred to the local curfew.

Saturday Matinee – Felix Semper, The Two Man Gentlemen Band, Batmobile & Hillbilly Moon Explosion

Felix Semper‘s paper sculptures are trippy as all heck, and the reason for it is even better. [h/t Suz P.]

Andy Bean & Fuller Condon, aka The Two Man Gentlemen Band, got some damn hot licks for having such clean hands.

Batmobile was founded in 1983:
After several months of covering Elvis Presley, Johnny Burnette en Gene Vincent songs, Jeroen Haamers (vocals/guitar), Johnny Zuidhof (drums) and Eric Haamers (double bass) decide to start writing their own material.
Best part happens at 1:17.
