Saturday Matinee – Archie Bell & The Drells

I love this sound.
One hot riff makes it. I used to dance like that, too.

Do the stroll ’70s style. That’s some hilarious stuff.

Yeah, I heard the original today, and it made me smile.
1:40 “Lemme put this hamburger down.”

Have a great weekend, folks. Rock on wit yo bad sefs.

Saturday Matinee – Stan Coster, Slim Dusty & Ali Mills

Stan Coster sings “The Wobbly Boot.”

Slim Dusty sings “The Three Rivers Hotel.”

Ali Mills sings Waltjim Bat Matilda (better known as Waltzing Matilda, written by her great uncle Val McGuinness).

Saturday Matinee – Vulfpeck, Lettuce Funk & Curtis Mayfield

Vulfpeck has a cool funk/jazz groove, reminds me of Weather Report, except these guys make ridiculous “I’m About To Pop A Nut” faces while they jam.

Lettuce [aka Lettuce Funk] combines retro funk with retro future funk, and it works.

Jump to 5:08 for the Kansas Joe & Memphis Minnie / Led Zeppelin funk mashup. (I hear some of Zappa’s “I Am The Slime” in there, too.) Lettuce even had the cojones to cover Curtis Mayfield, and they did him right.

Poor video quality, but the audio is good. Here’s Curtis Mayfield’s original “Move On Up” (with German subtitles).

Have a great weekend, folks, and Move On Up wit yo bad sef. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Steel Shredder, Egg Cracker, Android 207, Tom Waits & Pink Floyd

Not sure why, but this kind of stuff fascinates me.

Egg-breaking machine complete with egg-breaking porn soundtrack found here.

I ran across Paul Whittington‘s Android 207 a coupla years ago. Seems to fit.

Tom Waits‘ self-accompanied masterpiece “Clang Boom Steam” also seems appropriate.

From the Utoobage description: “The iconic video was created by Gerald Scarfe initially as a backdrop film for when the band [Pink Floyd] played the track on its 1977 In the Flesh tour.”
From the Utoobage comments: “Imagine having to wait 40 years to watch your favorite band’s official videoclip.”

Have a great weekend, folks, and don’t forget that astronomy is gonna happen tomorrow night.

Saturday Matinee – Fool-Pitying Life Lessons, Fruit Sounds, The Beat Farmers & The HU Band

“First name is Mister, middle name is a period, last name is T” [via].

Whoa. What’s that? Click on it to find out.
(Don’t worry, it’s not an advert. – Bunk)

Fruit noises [via]. It’s what my insides sound like at 3AM after eating the good stuff at 6PM.

The Beat Farmers was one helluva fun bar band, and “Blue Chevrolet” was one of my favorite roadtrip songs. I don’t recobanize the lineup except for the Jerry Raney lookalike on vocals and rhythm guitar, and it appears to be a tribute concert at the Belly Up Tavern in 2013. The legendary Country Dick Montana passed away in 1995 while playing drums on “The Girl I Almost Married.”

Never heard Country Dick?
This one’s for you, and so is the next one.

Mongolian folk metal blues band The HU is badass killer. Nope. Not gonna mess with them at all [via].

Have a great weekend folks. See you back here after the earth rotates 360 degrees.

Hot Shot Ain’t Cool.

Thought I’d share, not as much for the comment, but for the video.

Saturday Matinee – The Tractors, George Thorogood & The Destroyers, Blaze Bayley w/ Michelle Sciarrotta & The United States Navy Band

The Tractors – “Santa Claus Boogie” 1995.

George Thorogood & The Destroyers – “Rock and Roll Christmas” 1997.

Blaze Bayley & Michelle Sciarrotta – “Rock & Roll Christmas” 2013.

United States Navy Band – “Dueling Jingle Bells” 2016.

Just a few days left before I have to begin Christmas shopping so posting here may be sporadic. Have a great Pre-Christmas weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow for stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Christmas According To Kids

This is what happens when you ask a bunch of little kids to tell the story of Christmas with adult cameo actors. [Found here. Those below were found by U-Toobage association, and they’re entirely awesome..]

May God bless the innocents.

I wonder what would happen if you asked a bunch of grown-ups…

Saturday Matinee – Robot Attack, Weasel Pops, Speedgrass & Mall Boogie-Woogie

Nice amateur work: “Four years ago I set out to make a short film with my two boys and an iPhone. It’s done now. We hope you like it.” The background story is pretty cool, too [via].

Talent Night: Be patient with this one. The kid’s good, and I bet he’s a fan of PDQ Bach.

How ’bout some Speedgrass?

Fast pickin’ by a band with a great name: Trampled By Turtles. They have to change their strings each time they play that one.

Okay, so where do we go from here? Oh wait. I know.
How ’bout some British shopping mall piano boogie-woogie?

I don’t know who those two are, but they appear on several videos at the same location.

Have a great weekend, folks, see you back here in the wee hours. Or later.

Saturday Matinee – The Sounds of Life, Back of the Mike 1938, RARG, Buzzchopper & The Ramones

The “music” is irritating as hell, but with the videos it becomes awesome. If I embedded it correctly, it should play 13 short clips in sequence, and you can jump to the next one if you wish.
[Found via here.]

Old radio shows used similar sound effect techniques.

“Radio is the theater of the mind; television is the theater of the mindless.” – Steve Allen

Also note that the vid was a GM-sponsored short, so the good guys catch the bad guys in the end because the good guys are in a Chevrolet and the bad guys are only on horses.

Rarg is a land so perfect that the sun never rises until it is absolutely sure that everyone is awake. It is a wonderful place where everyone loves learning and making new discoveries. Until one day, an astonishing discovery is made… a discovery that might just be a problem.”

So where do we go from here? Oh, hell. I know: a sappy cover of Santo & Johnny.

Buzzchopper‘s other stuff sounds like Surf Ramones to me, and they opened for Mink Stole in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, 2010. Last time I passed through Harrisburg, you couldn’t buy beer or wine in a convenience store or in a supermarket, and that means that something’s seriously wrong with that place.

To all our frozen friends back east, awesome happens at about 1:00.

Have a great weekend, folks, and be back here for leftovers.
