Saturday Matinee – Fred Schneider, Cordell Jackson & Ghost Hounds

Once upon a time, Fred Schneider, lead singer of The B-52s, stole Harry Nilsson’s Coconut and took it for a joy ride. [h/t Madame Jujujive].

Sam Phillips / Sun Records shunned early rocker Cordell Jackson because “girls didn’t play guitar,” so in 1956, with the assistance of Chet Atkins, she founded Moon Records (now defunct).

Ghost Hounds are a classic rock ‘n’ blues band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, fronted by singer, songwriter (and motivational speaker) Tré Nation.

Lotta stuff went down last week – I got some good news, got rid of a burden, picked up another and so far I’m happy with the trade. Have a great weekend, batten down the hatches if you’re in the southwestern states, and we’ll watch the clouds roll in tomorrow.

Number 9 Train, Tarheel Slim (1958) Allen Rathel Bunn (1923-1977) recorded under various names but was best known as Tarheel Slim. Bunn enjoyed a successful recording career playing an eclectic variety of styles including gospel, R&B, blues, rockabilly, pop & soul. In 1963 he dropped out of the music business , but was “rediscovered” a decade later and resumed recording and performing on acoustic guitar until his death at the age of 53.

Eliza Stark & the Dappers – The first and only rockabilly band based in Montenegro.

The Marcus King Band hails from Greenville, South Carolina. A fourth-generation musician, Marcus King started learning guitar at age three or four and has played professionally since he was 11.

Saturday Matinee – Link Wray, Billy Bacon and The Forbidden Pigs & The Highmarts

Link Wray did what Elvis couldn’t.

Billy Bacon and the Forbidden Pigs = Billy Bacon / bass, vocals; Adrian Demain / guitar, vocals; David Bernson / drums. They were a fun band live.

The Highmarts = Suzu /guitar & vocals; Haruna / bass; Minako / drums (sitting in for Karin). More about this Japanese garage band here.

Saturday Matinee – Marcin Patrzalek, Ronnie Wood, and Samantha Fish w/ Jesse Dayton

Polish guitar savant Marcin Patrzalek‘s skills are astounding, combining Spanish flamenco with finger style. Much of his repertoire appears to be classical; this version of Bart Howard’s In Other Words (1954) is a bit lighter.

The 1987 concert was recorded and released the following year as Live At The Ritz. Yeah, I know what you’re thinking. “Where’s Bo?” It’s not a Utoobage typo – Bo Diddley shared the stage with Ronnie Wood but sat out this song.

Samantha Fish meets Jesse Dayton – Rockabilly happens with their cover of Brand New Cadillac (Vince Taylor & His Playboys, 1959). Too bad the bass isn’t heavier, but then the Cadillac would belong to Peter Gunn.

Get Rhythm, Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Two (1956) Originally calling themselves Johnny Cash and The Tennessee Three, Sun Records owner Sam Phillips suggested they go with The Tennessee Two after steel guitarist A.W. ‘Red’ Kernodle became too nervous to play and left the studio, leaving Luther Perkins (Fender electric guitar) and Marshall Grant (upright bass). By 1953 drummer W.S. Holland joined the band, and they eventually became The Tennessee Three again.

Saturday Matinee – Propellerheads w/ Shirley Bassey, Harry & The Howlers, and (the other) Roy Rogers

Propellerheads, with Shirley Bassey, the Welsh vocalist known for her renditions of themes to three James Bond movies.

“Propellerheads were a British big beat music band, formed in 1995, from Bath made up of electronic producers Will White and Alex Gifford. The term ‘Propellerhead’ is Californian slang for a computer nerd, and when Gifford and White heard a friend from California drop this into conversation, they thought it the perfect name for their band.”

From Birmingham, UK, Harry & The Howlers features what Harry (Haley) Jordan calls “sleaze-fuelled rock and roll.”

Roy Rogers is one of those guitslingers who doesn’t need a backup band to sound good, but give him one and the results are amazing.

Saturday Matinee – Raoul Servais, Doo Rag, Flat Duo Jets & Raskahuele

Harpya, by Belgian animator and filmmaker Raoul Servais, is based upon C.L. Moore’s 1933 creepy short story Shambleau.

Music video for the song Trudge by Tucson, Arizona duo Doo Rag, shot on 35mm film. Pure roots blues industrial punk is kinda hard on the earballs, but I like it.

Flat Duo Jets performed a cover of Benny Joy’s Wild Wild Lover on Letterman in 1990, with backup by Paul Schaefer’s Late Night band. Don’t know how I missed these psychobillies. Dexter Romweber was/is an animal.
