Saturday Matinee – Cutting Sand, Kelbe Schrank, Feng E & MGMT

8 minutes of slicing colored sand [via].

Kelbe Schrank‘s Dancing Manhole Cover Song is not related to the .gif in here but it is. Besides vocals and guitar, Schrank has a good hand at watercolors, too.

Feng E‘s father threatened that he’d never play LEGOs with the 5 year old again unless he learned to play ukelele. Cruel dad IMO, but the kid is amazing.

I’d heard MGMT before, but I didn’t know their name. I kind of like the sound of this one (The Monkees meet The Amboy Dukes) and the vid is quirky. Their song Time To Pretend is one of my favorites, but I get a bit choked up when I hear it.

Have a great weekend or not; it’s your choice, and we’ll be back tomorrow with a pile of stuff for you to sort through.

Vespertilionizing Hot Links

I’ll Always Remember Hawaii, Cyril Lefbevre (?) (2011)I don’t know anything about the musician other than he appears elderly and plays un Ukulélé MOTU français.

Cochineal bugs.

Knockemstiff, Ohio.

What time is it on Twitter?

It’s just an old comic book.

This is a herd of llamas in Khipu.

A lot of people pointing at things.

Lost your cursor arrow? This will find it.

When an apple doesn’t taste like an apple.

Packouz & Diveroli were the inspiration for War Dogs (2016).

UMPD brutality left him “mentally and emotionally tormented with an experience that will last a lifetime.” 😀

If Ivory Soap is 99 and 44/100% pure, what’s in the other 0.56%?

Saturday Matinee – Elvis Covers: You wanna puke or you wanna rock?

Found in here. So cute it’ll make you puke.

Yeah, she’s got it down on the uke, but it was garbage even when Elvis sung it. Adult singers are much worse since they should know better, like this FAIL, this FAIL and THIS MAJOR LEAGUE FAIL.

Now THIS is how to do an Elvis Cover right.

https://youtu.be/il_Fmr8lsWw

[BTW, Steve Goodman was the guy who co-wrote and recorded the best damn country song ever. He also wrote and recorded the best damn train song ever.]

This song comes to mind as well. Even Mojo Nixon got it and asplained it perfectly over 30 years ago.

Have a great weekend, folks. Be back here tomorrow to see if I’ve been banned from Twitter again.

Saturday Matinee – Por Uhklelelas, Eric Clapton & JJ Cale, & Bill Tapia

https://youtu.be/X2Oz7WUF27A

Por Uhklelelas nailed it, and that’s the prettiest version of the song I ever heard. Unfortunately I can’t find a link to their website. On the other hand I can link to this:

Bill Tapia, aka,The Duke of the Uke, calls the chords. Huell Howser interviewed him.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow whether you like it or not.

Saturday Matinee – Mull, Martin, Plastics, Grisman & Garcia, King & Preston &, um, Willis

Martin Mull in 1973 gets back to his roots in the Lake Erie delta.

Martin Mull’s college roommate was Steve Martin who was no slouch on banjo.

Awesome. I can play the plastic scale, too, but putting it into a high-speed vid makes the grade.

Now THIS is really annoying, so much so that I’m not going to post it here. You’re on you’re own, and I dare you to listen to the whole tutorial.  I couldn’t do it, but I can listen through this:

David Grisman & Jerry Garcia doing B.B. King’s classic “Thrill is Gone.”

To close it out, here’s B.B. King himself with Billy Preston and, um, Bruce Willis on harp. Have a great weekend folks, and remember that most of us can play harp better than Bruce Willis, who’s got no business at all in that lineup.

Saturday Matinee – Uke Covers! Yay!

Excellent version of  The Foundations’ “Build Me Up Buttercup.”  You know she’s singing to YOU…  wait for it. (Bunkessa found this one.)

Well, gabba gabba hey.

*Jake Shimabukuro’s Ukelele Gently Weeps.

*Led Zep on Uke with eggs and sausage and hot coffee.

*Minitallica!

Don’t forget the trainwreck previously posted here.

Videos marked with (*) were recobamended by saraH, who should have her own website by now but doesn’t.  She’s been lurking around for a long time, dropping rare occasional comments about batmobile babe magnets.

[Tip ‘o the tarboosh to saraH… your eco-friendly VatoMobile is in the works.]

Saturday Matinee: Ukeleles, Hair & Drums

Jake Shimabukuro makes his Uke Weep. Amazing.

Kaje. Nice hat. Nice Uke.

Nice animation.  Nice Uke.

Nice hair, no Ukes, but wait ’til you see their cantalopes. (Found it on this guy‘s website. The B-52’s are always cool.)

Not sure where these folks are from, but I’d love to hear ’em play this:

Todd Rundgren’s ska more than makes up for last week’s lack of Saturday Matinee offerings.  (Here’s Bad Manners’ take on “Bang the Drum All Day.” Unfortunately, no video, but Linerider rocks out here.)

[Image of headbangers via email from Grampa Strutts. More Ukelele here.]
