Ranivorous Hot Links

Nite Owl, Tony Allen and The Champs (1955) Anthony Penia Allon, aka Tony Allen, was born in New Orleans of mixed creole, Indian and black parents. He grew up a few houses down from Fats Domino who inspired him;  his musical resume is solid. This original version (by Tony Allen and The Chimes – Specialty Records got the group’s name wrong) was also released as Night Owl.

Night Owl, Bobby Paris (1966) Roberto Pares, aka Bobby Paris, was a blue-eyed soul singer (with brown eyes due to his Puerto Rican heritage). In 1956 Paris sang with The Golden Keys, a neighborhood R&B group, began his recording career in 1960 and eventually became a producer for Capitol Records. His first and biggest hit came in 1966 with his cover of Tony Allen’s Nite Owl, rearranged and mashed up with Tom Jones’ 1965 hit It’s Not Unusual.

Saturday Matinee – Fred Schneider, Cordell Jackson & Ghost Hounds

Once upon a time, Fred Schneider, lead singer of The B-52s, stole Harry Nilsson’s Coconut and took it for a joy ride. [h/t Madame Jujujive].

Sam Phillips / Sun Records shunned early rocker Cordell Jackson because “girls didn’t play guitar,”  so in 1956, with the assistance of Chet Atkins, she founded Moon Records (now defunct).

Ghost Hounds are a classic rock ‘n’ blues band from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, fronted by singer, songwriter (and motivational speaker) Tré Nation.

Lotta stuff went down last week – I got some good news, got rid of a burden, picked up another and so far I’m happy with the trade. Have a great weekend, batten down the hatches if you’re in the southwestern states, and we’ll watch the clouds roll in tomorrow.

The Nutria Buyer

Louis Petre, a nutria buyer (ca. 1970). National Archives and Records Administration

Nutrias are bigass swamp rats and Mr. Petre was likely a fur trader in the 1970s before the rodent was classified as an invasive species in the U.S. Besides being environmentally destructive, nutrias are such prolific breeders that they outstripped the demand tor their fur, the nutria fur trade business collapsed, trapping and killing stopped… then their populations exploded.
