I Love You Darling, 11 Year Old Faith Taylor & the Sweet Teens (1959)According to Luky 1966:
Faith Taylor was born in Dumas, Arkansas, in 1948. She began performing at the age of four and won her first amateur contest in Little Rock. She came to Chicago with her family in 1957 and continued her music career by singing at small club affairs. She also worked in a few combos, including that of Muddy Waters. In June 1957 she entered and won the ‘Morris B. Sachs Amateur Hour‘ on WGN-TV. The following year a friend of Taylor, Charles Jones, was assembling a vocal group and brought her in as the lead. Other members of this group were alto Yvonne Waddell (17), tenor Saundra Long (16), soprano Mary Collins (17), and bass Curtis Burrell (17). Most of the group came from two South Side high schools, DuSable and Dunbar. Faith Taylor and the Sweet Teens were unlike most ‘teen tenor lead’ groups in being mostly comprised of females. From that start, the group was not going to be a ‘girl group’ but one patterned after Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers.”

There’s a rumor that Sun Ra backed the Sweet Teens for some performances.

Saturday Matinee – The Great Ottowa Outbreak, Improv Everywhere, Pomplamoose & Widespread Panic

Straight Outta Gondwana: The Great Ottowa Outbreak of 2016 recorded on video. [Related post here.]

This is a fun one, and Improv Everywhere didn’t need much of a flash mob. More info here. [h/t Jonco]

“It’s such a shame that you became such an issue. Oh dear Johnny, I’ll miss you.”

Breakup songs can be so sad when a family is involved. Pomplamoose is a husband-and-wife team: singer-songwriter and bassist Nataly Dawn and multi-instrumentalist Jack Conte (CEO of Patreon).

That’s a wrap for this edition of The Saturday Matinee. See you tomorrow and we’ll do laundry.

Oh What A Baby, The Tonettes (1958)The Tonettes (aka The Claremonts) started out in the Bronx in 1957. Sisters Diana and Sylvia Sanchez were killing time when their TV crapped out and were harmonizing by the family piano when TV repairman and aspiring music biz impresario Lou Ezzo heard them. He convinced them to cut a demo session in 1957. Classmate Josie Allen completed the trio, and they had some success in the eastern U.S.

Love Of My Life, The Persuasions (2000)Frankly A Cappella: The Persuasions Sing Zappa is a tribute album released after Zappa’s death in 1993, and if you’re an FZ fan you’ll love it. In 1969 Frank Zappa heard The Persuasions singing in the background during a phone call to a record shop and promptly flew them to L.A. to record their first album Acappella (1970).

Saturday Matinee – NFL 2019 Bad Lip Reading, Zappa & The Persuasions

Bad Lipreading of NFL 2019 (via).

I’m kinda in a doo-wop mood, and St. Valentine’s Day is coming up. Czech this out.

https://youtu.be/ZOf3WBrUb-U

That’s one of my favorite Zappa love songs because he did it so righteously.

The Persuasions deserved more recognition than they ever got. They were always looking for an echo and they covered Zappa.

Have a great weekend, folks. See y’all back here tomorrow for stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Doodling In Math Class, Forklift Finesse, Vegetable Music, Funk Mashup & Lillian Reyes

That’s amazing. A cardioid is an anti-parabola. I never thought of it that way.
I used to do similar doodles, but nothing like hers. Draw a square, divide each line with dots, draw curvy lines top to bottom and right to left, then connect the diagonals and the result is a 2 dimensional wavy cloth. Or you can do dog-chase doodles to do spirals, but those need graphics to explain.

Amazing. Now I wanna see him do it with a Zippo [via].

Amazing. Now I wanna see him do it with meat [via].

Amazing. Now I gotta get up offa that thang.

Amazing R&B vocals featuring Lillian Reyes. I love this stuff.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more really important stuff.

Bonus – Old guys singing in a men’s room with great acoustics.

Saturday Matinee – Gravy Canes, The TeeTones, & Miscellaneous R&B

This kinda stuff makes me smile.

The TeeTones do it right, and I wanna be their bass man.

No idea who those guys are, but I wanna be their bass man.

These guys are great. I wanna be their bass man.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow.

[P.S. Thanks to The TeeTones for following. You guys are awesome, and I wanna be your bass man.]

Saturday Matinee – Shovels & Rope, Richard & Linda Thompson, & Postmodern Jukebox

Shovels and Rope have a nice country sound – with dawgs. They’re a husband and wife team.

They remind me a little of Richard and Linda Thompson.

That song is one of my all-time favorites for unknown reasons, and we’ve posted at least one other version before.

On the other hand, these folks crack me up because they’re so talented and so spot on. Here’s another great hit from PostModern Jukebox.

Have a great weekend, folks. See you back here tomorrow for more pasta and butter.

Saturday Matinee – Lecil Travis Martin, Steve Goodman & Little Isidore

Boxcar

Boxcar Willie’s “Winds Of Yesterday” is pretty cool ol’ country.

Don’t laugh. Steve Goodman was the author of the greatest train song ever, except for the one by Tiny Bradshaw.

Not sure where we’re going with this, so let’s go retro with Little Isidor and The Inquisitors.

Have a great weekend, folks, and be careful goin’ home.
