Saturday Matinee – Louis in the Studio, Kid Ory & Trombone Shorty

This exclusive video depicts Armstrong and his All Stars recording the master take of “I Ain’t Got Nobody,” as well as silent footage of them listening to the playback. Also featured in the clip are Trummy Young, trombone, Peanuts Hucko, clarinet, Billy Kyle, piano, Mort Herbert, bass and Danny Barcelona, drums.

I always thought Kid Ory came out of King Oliver’s Creole Jazz Band (along with Johnny Dodds, Baby Dodds and Louis Armstrong) but according to Wiki:

Ory had one of the best-known bands in New Orleans in the 1910s, hiring many of the great jazz musicians of the city, including cornetists Joe “King” Oliver, Mutt Carey, and Louis Armstrong, who joined the band in 1919; and clarinetists Johnny Dodds and Jimmie Noone.

So how ’bout some more in the same vein? Trombone Shorty’s tribute to Louis Armstrong ain’t bad, and he’s got one hell of a breathing trick.

[Confidential to Calo – That one’s for you. Condolences.]

Have a great weekend, folks, and be back here tomorrow for more, you know, stuff.

The Saturday Matinee – Capuchin Monkeys, The Cramps, The Two Man Gentlemen Band & Tuba Skinny

This clip from Frans de Waal’s TED presentation amuses me (and I may have posted it previously).

The Cramps were a product of the legendary 1970s CBGB NY punk scene, as were these folks:

Okay I lied. The Two Man Gentlemen Band never played at CBGBs (which stood for Country, Blue Grass & Blues in case you didn’t know). Let’s go for one more.

Tuba Skinny is a modern day traditional classic.

Have a great weekend, folks, and we’ll be back tomorrow, rain or shine.

Saturday Matinee – Saving Daylight Trailer, Caifanes, The Iguanas & Tito Puente

Saving Daylight – The Movie.  [via].

The guy that brings our mail and kills the rats in our building showed up today wearing a baseball jersey with Los Caifanes logo on it, so I asked him about it, and he told me. They remind me a bit of these guys:

Although it’s real bad advice, “Oye, Isabel” is one of The Iguanas‘ catchiest tunes. Okay, let’s go for one more, and since we’re on a latino music kick tonight, here’s some addictive Mambo rhythms from Tito Puente.

Have a great weekend, folks, and we’ll see you back here on Sunday.

Saturday Matinee – Sam Chatmon, Rory Gallagher & Night Music

Sam Chatmon (1897 – 1983) was a classic Mississippi Delta bluesman with a great voice and pure country pickin’.

Roots blues rocker Rory Gallagher jams William Harris’s 1928 song “Bullfrog Blues” in 1980.

From 1989’s “Night Music,” (produced by Lorne Michaels of SNL fame) this line up is pretty awesome. It’s a long vid, but I think I got the numbers right if you want to skip the intros.
Was (Not Was) – 04:22, 21:16
Sonny Rollins – 08:30, 30:16
Leonard Cohen – 13:45, 34:30
Ken Nordine – 26:07.

That should hold you for a while. Be back here tomorrow for more amazing and astounding inanity.

Saturday Matinee – Ленинград, Les McCann w/ Eddie Harris, Alvin Lee & Ten Years After

Russian Ska/Punk/Dixieland Band Leningrad features a woman with bigger choppers than Carly Simon. No idea what they’re singing about, but I like the sound.

BTW, Vladimir Putin can go to hell and take the KGB and Pravda with him. [Related post here.]

1969 jazz classic by pianist Les McCann and saxophonist Eddie Harris has staying power. The music was great and the lyrics are relevant today, but with a different meaning.

I was at a stop light recently and a 1970 convertible Mustang pulled up cranking some awesome.
I hollered at the graybeard, “WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO?
He yelled back, “ALVIN LEE!

Ten Years After, recorded live: 4 August 1975 – Winterland (San Francisco, CA).

Have a great weekend, folks, we’ll be back tomorrow despite the heat and the traffic.

The Argument Of The Beard goes like this:

“…For if once a man indulges himself in murder, very soon he comes to think little of robbing; and from robbing he comes next to drinking and Sabbath-breaking, and from that to incivility and procrastination. Once [one] begin[s] upon this downward path, you never know where you are to stop. Many a man has dated his ruin from some murder or other that perhaps he thought little of at the time.”

Saturday Matinee – Mardi Gras & St. Valentine’s Day Combined: Smoking Time Jazz Club, Grampa Eliot and Doreen’s Jazz

“Percolatin’ Blues” courtesy of Smoking Time Jazz Club.

Grampa Eliot sings the truth.

Doreen’s Jazz is entirely awesome.

Have a great weekend, folks, remember the Presidents who afforded us our freedoms and those who assist in taking them away, and be back here tomorrow for more stuff.

Oh, and this and this. Do it.

Saturday Matinee – Stephanie Trick, Tuba Skinny, Nanook & Zappa

“Hand Full of Keys,” performed here by Stephanie Trick, is a Fats Waller composition, circa 1938. Awesome stride piano style. Although I’m somewhat ambidextrous and have a basic understanding of music theory and chords, there’s no way I could cut those chops.

Tuba Skinny is my favorite band these days.

I had a conversation with some of my co-workers recently, and the topic of Yellow Snow came up. I tried to explain Nanook of the North and failed, so we’re forced into Zappa mode.

You can find Zappa’s “Nanook Rubs It” on the Utoobage on your own, but “Deathless Horsie” is amazing.

Have a great SuperBowl Weekend folks. Seattle sucks big green donkeys because Seattle sucks big green donkeys. Everyone outside of Seattle knows Seattle sucks big green donkeys and so does Seattle. Seattle sucks big green donkeys.

Saturday Matinee – The Sant Andreu Jazz Band, Tuba Skinny & Trombone Shorty

The Sant Andreu Jazz Band is from Barcelona Spain, features 7-20 year olds. Here’s their website. I love early American jazz, and they nail it.

Some friends visited New Orleans recently, gave me a CD of Tuba Skinny. They didn’t believe that I’d heard of them even though I’d posted two of their vids some time ago. The girl on cornet is awesome, knows her chops.

Want some funk with that jazz? Here’s Trombone Shorty.

Have a great extended holiday weekend, folks. See y’all back here tomorrow.
