Joe Bonamassa‘s Merry Christmas Blues album (2013) is free for download (I think).

Except for a hit in 1978, songwriter and perfomer Chris Rea is virtually unknown in the US (having never toured here). Despite long term medical problems, he’s enjoyed a successful career in the UK.

Saturday Matinee – Blender CG Compilation, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, Mountain Music & Joe Bonamassa

I’m on the Blender email list, and occasionally they link to video tutorials/demos. I don’t use the CG program, but its capabilities blow me away. The guy who compiled the animations ran out of audio at about 03:10 but dealt with it pretty well.

In 1965, David Hoffman filmed some genuine hill music from the mountains of North Carolina for a television documentary. Music starts at 04:28. (If you want to hear the four and a half minute lead in, start at 00:00.) Hoffman filmed those same musicians in the best clogging video you’ll find.

This animated cartoon music video of Richard Hell and the Voidoids‘ single “The Kid with the Replaceable Head” (Radar, 1979) was created by Washington D.C. kid’s show “Pancake Mountain.” The song was written by Richard Hell, and this recording was produced by Nick Lowe.

2009 Joe Bonamassa sounds a lot like 1974 Robin Trower. I like it.

Saturday Matinee – Live at Crossroads 2010: Hubert Sumlin, Jimmie Vaughn and Robert Cray; Pino Daniele, Joe Bonamassa and Robert Randolph & The Family Band; AND ZZ Top

Wow. Hubert Sumlin, Jimmie Vaughan and Robert Cray at the 2010 Crossroads Guitar Festival.

Wow again. Pino Daniele, Joe Bonamassa with Robert Randolph & The Family Band were also at the 2010 CGF.

Good God can these three put out some loud! ZZ Top at the same place, same year.

It just dawned on me that it’s been 10 years since all that awesome went down. Lotta time flies buzzing around my head these days.

Saturday Matinee – Clanadonia, Mickey Hart / Planet Drum & Joe Bonamassa with Tina Guo

How ’bout something primal? Nothing better than Scottish tribal drums and bagpipes. Clanadonia is what it is, and it’s loud. “The Last of the Glaswegians” is going to be stuck in my head for days.

Mickey Hart & Planet Drum perform “Fire On The Mountain” (24 July 1999, Rome, New York).

Amazing speed cellist Tina Guo jams it with Joe Bonamassa on “Woke Up Dreaming” at Carnegie Hall (June 2017?). Takes them a bit to get in synch, then it soars. Guo’s take on Led Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” is fun, too.

Reminds me of Tom Waits’ “Conundrum” that he described as the sound of “a jail door closing behind you” and says it looks “kind of like a Chinese torture device.”

So many uncredited influences crammed into one awesome jam.

Saturday Matinee: Dancebot, Johnny Cash, Howlin’ Wolf & Joe Bonamassa

Very cool bot moves. Amazing that the people can replicate their own moves, too.

That’s Howlin’ Wolf in 1966. The song was a reworking of “Hey Lawdy Mama,” written and performed by Buddy Moss in 1934. Wolf’s version was covered by The Fabulous Thunderbirds and re-titled “Runnin’ Shoes.”

Bonamassa’s touring band, dubbed the “Muddy Wolf Band” [and] includes Anton Fig (drums), Michael Rhodes (bass), Reese Wynans (piano, Hammond organ), Lee Thornburg (trumpet, horn arrangements), Ron Dziubla (saxophone), Nick Lane (trombone), Mike Henderson (harmonica), and Kirk Fletcher (guitar) [via].

Saturday Matinee – Spoondog, New Orleans Zombie Report, “The Creation” & Joe Bonamassa

Since tomorrow is the SuperBowl, here’s how one New Orleans reporter trolled an inebriated videobomber.

Joe Bonamassa‘s  “Just Got Paid” at the 2009 North Sea Jazz Festival. So much groove crammed into one jam, and it’d take me too long to post all of the obvious influences. “Wheedlie-wheedlie-spoo” guitar solos turn me off because they sound silly and self-indulgent, but this ‘un is a good ‘un.
