Saturday Matinee – The Platypus Conspiracy, Messer Chups, Tito & Tarantula and Rory Gallagher

The Platypus [h/t Gord S.]

From St. Petersburg, Russia,  Messer Chups is listed under vampire space zombie surf rock, and their version of the Bondage theme is the best I’ve heard. Recorded at Brin de Zinc (Chambery-France) 2014
Oleg Gitaracula – guitar;  Zombierella – Bass; Rockin Eugene – Drums.

Ten minutes of a bluesy Doors-ish groove. Tito and Tarantula were filmed for an episode of Texas Roadhouse Live (hosted by Kinky Friedman) in 2010. Tito Larriva played Radio Head in the movie TRUE Stories (1986) and was a founding member of The Plugz.

Rory Gallagher slides all over the place at the Montreux Jazz Festival, July 1977. Five years earlier he was crowned International Guitarist of the Year. He died in 1995 at the age of 47, from liver failure caused by prescription drugs; his grave marker is a replica of the award.

That’ll do for now. Have a great weekend, see you back here sometime tomorrow.

Veterans Day – An Interview with a Vietnam Green Beret

Green Beret David Christian was unquestionably a war hero in the Vietnam war and as he says, fought valiantly on behalf of the USA. My team and I conducted more than 200 interviews in 1989 from people who had lived through the 1960s and had strong feelings about what they had witnessed and lived through, not only during the war, but in the 1950s growing up and in the time since that war has ended. David Christian was wounded 7 times receiving 7 purple hearts as well as the Distinguished Service Cross for heroism. When he returned from the war, he worked as he does today, to help Vietnam veterans. Bill Ehrhardt, who presents his story in my very popular video clip, “Magnificent Storyteller Soldier” shared his personal experience. Many of my subscribers have reacted to it. I feel that David Christian is an equally powerful storyteller whose war perceptions and experiences were quite different. In this video he reflects on his early upbringing in the 1950s, his Catholicism, his powerful relationship with his mother, his experiences with college protesters in the antiwar movement, his return to America and his battles to help his fellow veterans deal with PTSD, job opportunities and other issues that they have confronted. His story evolves during the interview as he expresses more and more deeply, how he felt and what he saw and how he dealt with it. – Filmmaker David Hoffman

Update: David Christian’s Distinguished Service Cross citation is here.

Ghost Apples

KENT COUNTY, Mich. (WOOD) — The freezing rain created an unusual phenomenon in the Fruit Ridge area of Kent County: “ghost apples.”Andrew Sietsema sent in photos of the hollow ice apples to ReportIt late Wednesday night. He said he came across the interesting formations while pruning apple trees earlier that day.

Sietsema said the freezing rain coated rotting apples, creating a solid icy shell around them. When he pruned the trees, they would shake, causing many of the frozen apples to fall off, ice and all. However with a few of them, the mush slipped out of the bottom of the ice casing, leading to a “ghost apple.”

Sietsema says the temperature provided the perfect recipe: it was cold enough for the ice to remain, but warm enough for the apples to turn to complete mush, since apples have a lower freezing point than water.

Sietsema said Jonagolds are one of his favorite apple varieties, “but we’ll call these Jonaghosts.”

“Ghost Apple” photos were posted on Facebook by Andrew Sietsema on 06 February 2019. The following day the story (w/ photos) appeared on the website of WOODTV Channel 8, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

It’s hard to tell, when the devils look like angels and angels look like hell.
The Reverend Peyton’s Bid Damn Band has an appropriate message for the upcoming elections.
