Saturday Matinee – SOUR, A Southern Gospel Revival, The Kentucky Headhunters & The Reverend Horton Heat

A Southern Gospel Revival updates classic gospel with amazing vocals and bluegrass.

The Kentucky Headhunters showed up on my radar long ago with the best (and only?) cover of Davy Crockett ever. Glad to see they’re still having fun.

Reverend Horton Heat tells the story before he growls out Motörhead‘s classic Ace of Spades.

Saturday Matinee – Pursuit of Ghosts, INSA & Pink Floyd

Pursuit of Ghosts is a representation of the daily grind. We assign meaning to our existence , what matters to me might not matter to you.
Mesmerizing animation by Kevin McGloughlin uses footage by photography pioneer Eadward Muybridge  with music by Max Cooper and Tim Hodge.

Daredevil Global .Gif promo (2016) features  INSA and his “Gif-iti.” He creates some amazing stuff, including the Rockin’ Rolls posted here.

“Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii , Italy. The main footage in and around the amphitheatre was filmed over four days in October 1971, using the band’s regular touring equipment, including studio-quality 24-track tape recorders.”

Kinda spacy trippy stuff for this 3-day weekend, and if you’re headed out, be sure to drive fast. The less time on the road reduces the odds of an accident. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Rail Yard Ghosts, The Spuny Boys & BoDeans

Railyard Ghosts are a self-described “deathgrass band” from Minnesota, but are categorized by others as a folk punk  orchestra. Their lineup is constantly changing, excepting Ms. RabbitTail Abigail and Mr. Riley Coyote. Not much more about them here.

The Spunyboys covered Ronnie Dawson‘s 1959 hit Rockin’ Bones with reverence in 2018, Villeneuve St. George, France.

BoDeans formed in 1986 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and they’re still at it. Recorded in 1993 and performed here in 2015, Closer to Free is their biggest hit to date.

Looks like something big and nasty is comin’ round the mountain, and it’s not gonna be fun. Hope the effects don’t affect us as much as I think they will, but we’ll carry on. See you back here tomorrow and we’ll do laundry.

Saturday Matinee – Richard Thompson, Y Niwl & The Dip

“It’s kind of a social misfit song, nothing autobiographical here at all.” Richard Thompson, underrated folk rock guitarist and songwriter.

Cob Records of Porthmadog, Gwynedd, Wales hosted a farewell party in 2012 featuring North Wales surf rock gods Y Niwl . The band’s name is pronounced Uh Nule – “The Fog” in Welsh.

The Dip  is comprised of jazz students from  University of Washington (Seattle) and not only do they have the retro soul sound down, they got cowbell.

Lotta stuff going down these days, some good, some bad, and some is downright abhorrent. Let’s enjoy what what we like, protect what we treasure and we’ll deal with the rest when it comes. Have a great weekend, see you sometime tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Trombone Talk with Haruka Kikuchi, R.L. Boyce & friends, and The Stacy Mitchhart Band

Trombone Talk with Haruka Kikuchi (aka Queen of the Tailgate Trombone).

R.L Boyce jams with Jimmy “Duck” Holmes, Australia Jones, Sherena Boyce, Randy “19th Street Red” Cohen, Dave Hundrieser, Jay Bundy Johnson, Tommy “Ribs” Hillifer and others. Filmed at the Blue Front Cafe in Bentonia, Mississippi, and overdubbed from the album Rattlesnake Boogie.

The Stacy Mitchhart Band – Outta Cincinnati and on to Nashville, Mitchhart preaches the roots. Great stuff.

Saturday Matinee – Girl X, Roy Head, The Black Keys & Gary Clark Jr.

Roy Head (sans The Traits) showed off his JB moves  while lip-syncing on  Hollywood A Go-Go (a Shindig wannabe) in 1965. Too bad the vid fades out before the song is over.

The Black Keys are still at it.

Gary Clark Jr. set the surf on fire in 2016 with 10-1/2 minutes of pure awesome.

Have a peaceful Easter and take time to remember what it’s all about.

Saturday Matinee – The Tielman Brothers, Undercover S.K.A. and Kitty, Daisy & Lewis

They were the greatest early rock and roll band you never heard of.
The Tielman Brothers were of Indonesian/Dutch ancestry and made a name for themselves, first in East Indonesia, and later in the Netherlands. In 1958 they recorded Rock Little Baby of Mine, considered to be the first Dutch rock ‘n’ roll record

Undercover S.K.A., a third-wave band from San Francisco, began as a one-off gig for a backyard party in the 1990s. They lost band leader Bob Glynn in 2017.

Kitty, Daisy and Lewis Durham “giving a free gig at Brewdog Shorditch; to win tickets you had to draw a picture of one of their songs,” 11 April 2012. Those are their parents filling in on bass and rhythm guitar. [Previously posted vids and info here.]

Saturday Matinee – Johnny Blues Cárdenasis, Percy Wiggins & The Bo-Keys, & Wycliffe Gordon’s Big Band

Johnny  “Johnny Blues” Cárdenasis is a blind self-taught street  musician from Santiago, Chile, who plays nothing but roots blues. There are  interviews with him on the Utoobage, but they lack captions and my Spanish is rusty.

The Bo-Keys featuring soul gospel singer Percy Wiggins.
