Saturday Matinee – Raoul Servais, Doo Rag, Flat Duo Jets & Raskahuele

Harpya, by Belgian animator and filmmaker Raoul Servais, is based upon C.L. Moore’s 1933  creepy short story Shambleau.

Music video for the song Trudge by Tucson, Arizona duo Doo Rag, shot on 35mm film. Pure roots blues industrial punk is kinda hard on the earballs, but I like it.

Flat Duo Jets  performed a cover of Benny Joy’s Wild Wild Lover on Letterman in 1990, with backup by Paul Schaefer’s Late Night band. Don’t know how I missed these psychobillies. Dexter Romweber was/is an animal.

Saturday Matinee – Vi Hart, Otros Aires, The Head Cat & Gunhild Carling

Vi Hart has put together some amazing videos over the years – her series Doodling in Math Class is excellent. [h/t Memo Of The Air]

Otros Aires is “a 21 Century Audiovisual ElectroTango project created,  produced and directed by the Argentinean musician, architect & video artist Miguel Di Genova. It was made between Barcelona and Buenos Aires ports in 2003.“

The Head Cat, live at The Key Club, West Hollywood, California, May 6th, 2010, consisted of Slim Jim Phantom (Stray Cats) Lemmy Kilmister (Motörhead) & Danny B. Harvey (Rockats). Lemmy died in 2015 at the age of 70 and was replaced by David Vincent (Morbid Angel).

Gunhild Carling is amazing. Someone told her the bag pipes are a musical instrument so she played them.

Saturday Matinee – Terry Gilliam, Oliver’s Boogie, Booker T. & The M.G.’s, and someone named Fran Martin

With only a week until Christmas, Booker T. & The M.G.’s Time Is Tight seems fitting. Have a great weekend. I’m gonna sleep in before things get too busy.

Saturday Matinee – Bobby Banas, Booker T. & the M.G.s, Zontar Venus, and MonoNeon w/ Davey Nathan,

He was 30 years old when he ripped up The Judy Garland Show in 1964. From the Utoobage comments:
“The ‘Best Boy Dancer’ happened to be the choreographer for this dance. His name is Bobby Banas. He also played Joyboy in Westside story.”
I’d say the girl did a bang up job but she got no credit.

Saturday Matinee – DoodleChaos, M. Shadows, Shadows Nepal & The Shadows

M. Shadows screams about something for half a minute.

The Shadows Nepal, from Narayangadh, Chitwanrock, have been performing for over 20 years and have a large following, both in Nepal and around the world. Dharma appeared on their 2nd album, Hidne Manche Ladcha, released in 2006. More about them here.

The Shadows in a clip from the 1961 movie The Young Ones, complete with their typical choreography (and some overdubbed not-quite-Beatlesque screaming girls).

Saturday Matinee – Girl X, Roy Head, The Black Keys & Gary Clark Jr.

Roy Head (sans The Traits) showed off his JB moves  while lip-syncing on  Hollywood A Go-Go (a Shindig wannabe) in 1965. Too bad the vid fades out before the song is over.

The Black Keys are still at it.

Gary Clark Jr. set the surf on fire in 2016 with 10-1/2 minutes of pure awesome.

Had some good karma come visit in the past week: doc called and said there’s nothing important to discuss, Gord sent me some cool prints, and my workload has expanded. Then it balanced itself somewhat: a computer crash did some minor damage, and snakes ate my catalytic converter at 3am yesterday. Life happens.

Saturday Matinee – Cat City, Pinetop Perkins & Luther Johnson

Joe Willie “Pinetop” Perkins (1913-2011) passed on a year after this performance. A long time member of Muddy Waters‘ band, he recorded Pinetop’s Boogie Woogie (1953), a song originally written and recorded by Clarence “Pinetop” Smith in 1929.

Woman Don’t Lie & Somebody Loan Me A Dime  – Luther Johnson, with  Sonny Thompson on piano (1973). The second [3:50] is a cover of a Fenton Robinson song.
