Storm the Transformed Ninja

Henshin Ninja Arashi (変身忍者 嵐, roughly translated as “Storm the Transformed Ninja”) is a 1972 Jidaigeki Toku series created by Shotaro Ishinomori.

“Set in the Edo Period of Japan, the series follows a young ninja named Hayate, who is the son of a man who developed a special technique called the “Transformation Jutsu” capable of granting a superhuman form. However, their Ninja clan, the warmongering Blood Wheel Clan, begins using the Transformation Jutsu to spread fear and terror all throughout Japan as part of their campaign to conquer it.”

Zippy the Chimp

According to “Zippy’s mom” Carole Womack, Zippy the Chimp was “discovered” by Bob Smith, “Buffalo Bob” of the long running and famous “Howdy Doody Show” while on vacation in New Orleans. Zippy stole a cherry out of Bob’s drink and was rewarded with a five year contract.

Besides The Ed Sullivan Show [1953], Zippy The Chimp was on the Captain Kangaroo, Gary Moore and Jackie Gleason television shows. He also played the role of Cheetah in the Tarzan movies and appeared in numerous television commercials.

There are conflicting stories about Zippy; “he” may have been a 4 year old female named Debbie. When she grew too large to handle, she retired from performing and was sent to the Bronx Zoo in 1960.

In reality there were many performing chimpanzees named Zippy, and most of them were trained by Lee Ecuyer. In 1953, Ecuyer and Buffalo Bob Smith published Zippy the Chimp, a children’s book with photos of young Zippy.

Brilliant.

I had a TV just like that. It stopped working when a raw egg somehow got into the rear vent over the CRT and fried it.

Saturday Matinee – Ronco’s Greatest Hits, Han Li, Sam Chatmon, Magic Slim & The Teardrops

Just a few more shopping days left. Go for it [via].

“We found the happiest lady [Han Li] in China. We told her that you don’t need a real hula hoop to have fun. She agreed.”

Khruangbin made me smile [found here].

Sam Chatmon (1897-1983) sang his version of a classic cheatin’ song in 1978. Apparently the vid was filmed by Alan Lomax.

The origin of the song “Make Me A Pallet On The Floor” is fuzzy and dates to the 1800s. It appeared in sheet music in 1908 in “Blind Boone’s Southern Rag Medley No. One: Strains from the Alleys.

Now check out John William Blind Boone‘s amazing story…

Magic Slim, aka Morris Holt (1937-2013). Nice Chicago blues [via].

Magic Slim was forced to give up playing the piano when he lost his little finger in a cotton gin mishap. He first came to Chicago in 1955 with his friend and mentor Magic Sam. The elder (by six months) Magic (Sam) let the younger Magic (Slim) play bass with his band and gave him his nickname.

Have a great weekend folks. Be back here tomorrow for more stuff.

I Want this TV Ten Years From Now.

A television screen is inset into an avant-garde cabinet for canned music called the “Kuba Komet” at the Radio and Television Exhibition in Frankfurt, West Germany, Aug. 5, 1957. As well as the television set, the Komet houses a radio, a record player and a tape recorder. The upper part of the assembly swings on a vertical axis to face any direction.
