Fatty Patty, Lee Pickett & The Screamers (1958)Lee Pickett (rhythm guitar and slap bass) joined up with Marvin Ross (lead guitar) and Paul Jennings (drums) and recorded Fatty Patty and She Left Me With The Blues in a Denver basement. Marvin recalled, “We only used ‘Lee Pickett & The Screamers’ for that one record & a few promotional bookings.  Jolt Records picked the name for us, but by then we had taken the name of the Blue Rhythms.”

Saturday Matinee – Kay Kyser, John & Adrian, The Wheelgrinders & James “Super Chikan” Johnson

Kay Kyser (& his Kollege of Musical Knowledge) performed one of the strangest compositions I’ve heard recently. Invented in 1939, the Sonovox (or Talk Box)  was featured in many advertisements, and used for the voice of the talking train in Disney’s Dumbo. [Found here via here.]

Possibly the best lip sync  of Maurice Williams & The Zodiacs ever.  (That’s John and Adrian according to the YouTube post notes.) Whoop, la-di-dah.

The Wheelgrinders are three hep cats from Vancouver B.C. cranking some entirely bitchin’ roots rockabilly. [h/t Gord S.]

Famed Mississippi bluesman James “Super Chikan” Johnson plays a mean butterfly diddley bow.

Big Guitars From Texas Do the Dootz ca. 1985: Evan Johns, Don Leady, Denny Freeman, Frankie Camaro, Keith Ferguson and Mike Buck.
Buck (drums) and Ferguson (bass) were original members of The Fabulous Thunderbirds, Leady & Ferguson were also members of The Tailgators, Leady, Buck & Johns were with The LeRoi Brothers.

Don Leady with Alberto Telo (drums), Gil T (bass) and a 13 year old Jack Montesinos (guitar) cover Sonny Fisher in 2015.

Johan “Bottleneck John” Eliasson (Resolian guitar) with Oskar Arhusiander Stefan Swen (harp) and a 1920 Midwest Utilitor (rhythm) live from Sweden in 2011.

Saturday Matinee – The Drink, The Fly By Night Rounders (w/ The Spoon Lady), Mick Wigfall & The Toxics

“After a little more than 2 months of work here it finally is! ‘The Drink’, a short film that’s 100% CGI. […] I really tried replicating the look of old 60s film photography and the almost dreamy Hollywood feel. I spent a lot of time researching lenses, different characteristics, how old 90s movies where filmed, how traditional film reacts to certain conditions, etc, and I’ve really learnt a lot during this whole process.”

William Landgren is 14 years old.

From the streets of Asheville NC, the Fly By Night Rounders  have an interesting bluegrass / country blues style, and The Spoon Lady has a fascinating life story.

Mick Wigfall & the Toxics are a European power trio that most in the U.S. (including me) have never heard of – details at the link – and that’s a very nice 1955 Chevy Bel Air in the vid.
The band consists of

Sébastien “Seb” Ailhaud – guitar.

Saturday Matinee – The Firebirds, Dracula’s Daughters, Mad Jack & the Hatters, and The Meteors

The Firebirds were the only British band to play the 2002 Rockabilly Festival, which marked the 50th anniversary of Sun Records and 25th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death.

Dracula’s Daughters are Emily & Elizabeth Butters (with Forrest Butler and Jim, Mitch & Elias from Boston’s Triple Thick).

Mad Jack and the Hatters are, um, interesting…

Formed in South London in 1980, The Meteors are considered the first verifiable psychobilly band (and the second band to use the term).

Saturday Matinee – Guitar Wolf, Robert Gordon & Wesseh Freeman

Guitar Wolf mixes The Ramones, Link Wray, rockabilly & 1977 punk and they call it “jet rock ‘n’ roll.” Don’t know how I missed these guys – they make some great noise.

Robert Gordon took Marshal Crenshaw‘s catchy tune and added just a pinch of psychobilly. The band includes Danny Gatton and Lance Quinn on guitars, Tony Garnier on electric bass and Shannon Ford on drums.

Wesseh Freeman from Monrovia, Liberia, was almost completely blind. He built his guitar from an oil can, a neck shaped with a machete, and strings from bicycle cables.  Amazing story despite a sad ending: he was 41 when he was struck by a car and died in 2018. [h/t Octopus]

Saturday Matinee – Old Buckers, Roy Buchanan, Pete Anderson & The Swamp Shakers

Buckin’ and beer. Buck dancing is related to clogging, flat footing, step dancing, and this film from the 1950s refers to it as skiffle. You already know about beer.

Roy Buchanan, aka “The World’s Greatest Unknown Guitarist,” from a PBS documentary 1971. Buchanan was most famously associated with a 1953 Fender Telecaster nicknamed ‘Nancy’. In 1988 he was arrested for public intoxication and was found hanged from his own shirt in the Fairfax County Virginia Jail. He was 48.

Pete Anderson was “the very first true rocker in the entire former Soviet Union” and formed The Swamp Shakers in Riga, Latvia, in 2009. Anderson passed away in 2016, but The Swamp Shakers continue performing as a trio.

The Paladins were/are an underrated but great 3-man flat head six rockabilly band. I saw them decades ago opening for The Fabulous Thunderbirds at the original Golden Bear.
