Safe European Home, The Clash (1978) The song is about a trip to Jamaica gone wrong, hence the lyrics “I went to the place where every white face is an invitation to robbery.”

Singer Joe Strummer and guitarist Mick Jones were sent to Jamaica for two weeks in December 1977 to write songs for their upcoming second album. “We must’ve looked like a strange pair to the locals… I’m surprised we weren’t filleted and served on a plate of chips” noted Jones. “We went down to the docks and I think we only survived because they mistook us for sailors.”

Saturday Matinee – Felix Semper, The Two Man Gentlemen Band, Batmobile & Hillbilly Moon Explosion

Felix Semper‘s paper sculptures are trippy as all heck, and the reason for it is even better. [h/t Suz P.]

Andy Bean & Fuller Condon, aka The Two Man Gentlemen Band, got some damn hot licks for having such clean hands.

Batmobile was founded in 1983:
After several months of covering Elvis Presley, Johnny Burnette en Gene Vincent songs, Jeroen Haamers (vocals/guitar), Johnny Zuidhof (drums) and Eric Haamers (double bass) decide to start writing their own material.
Best part happens at 1:17.

Hillbilly Moon Explosion is done with that truck but keeps driving anyway.

Sound Mirror

Sound mirror, Abbott’s Cliff, England, 1928

Sound or acoustic mirrors were one of the first early warning detection systems invented to give advanced notice of an approaching enemy aircraft. These worked by focusing the sound from the plane’s engine so it could be heard before it was visible.

Sound mirrors worked using a curved surface to concentrate sound waves into a central point, which were picked up by a sound collector and later by microphones. An operator using a stethoscope would be stationed near the sound mirror, and would need specialist training in identifying different sounds. Distinguishing the complexity of sound was so difficult that the operators could only listen for around 40 minutes.

Stormy Weather, The Spaniels (1958) Pookie Hudson & The Hudsonaires formed in 1952 at Roosevelt High School, Gary, Indiana. The following year they scored a top 10 hit with  Baby It’s You. as the Spaniels. Two years later they recorded their classic Good Night  Sweetheart, Goodnight and became one of the most successful R&B groups of their time.

Tyler Bryant & the Shakedown cranks some blues rock that ain’t watered down at all. Bryant is married to Rebecca Lovell of Larkin Poe.

Baron Manfred Freiherr Von Richthofen sits in the cockpit of his Albatros fighter for a photograph with his squadron, Jagdstaffel III. Richthofen was credited with downing 80 Allied aircraft before being shot down over the Somme, Northern France, during what was known by pilots on both sides as ‘Bloody’ April, 1917. Manfred’s brother, Lothar, is seated at front (fur collar).
