Woodpecker Rock, Nat Couty & The Braves (1958)Born in Natchez, Louisiana on 6 October 1934, Nat Couty played in bands for most of his life, but only recorded one other song – Won’t You Come Along With Me (the flip side). He suffered a stroke in 1999 and died of a heart attack the following year.

Saturday Matinee – SOUR, A Southern Gospel Revival, The Kentucky Headhunters & The Reverend Horton Heat

SOUR日々の音色 (Hibi no neiro)‘  video from 2009 coordinated Zoom before Zoom.

A Southern Gospel Revival updates classic gospel with amazing vocals and bluegrass.

The Kentucky Headhunters showed up on my radar long ago with the best (and only?) cover of Davy Crockett ever. Glad to see they’re still having fun.

Reverend Horton Heat tells the story before he growls out Motörhead‘s classic Ace of Spades.

Running out of useful brain cells tonight, so have a great weekend and we’ll see you back her tomorrow for no good reason at all.

I Go Into Orbit, Johnny Acey (1962)John Acey Goodelock (1925-2009) was an east coast R&B singer / pianist who began recording in 1953, and also recorded as Johnny Chef, Acey, J. Acey, and Johnny Acey And His Fingerpoppers. I was unable to find the lineup for this recording; the 45rpm credits Texas songwriter LaCharles Harper and it may have been the inspiration for Stevie Ray Vaughn’s Pride and Joy.

Saturday Matinee – Pursuit of Ghosts, INSA & Pink Floyd

Pursuit of Ghosts is a representation of the daily grind. We assign meaning to our existence , what matters to me might not matter to you.
Mesmerizing animation by Kevin McGloughlin uses footage by photography pioneer Eadward Muybridge  with music by Max Cooper and Tim Hodge.

Daredevil Global .Gif promo (2016) features  INSA and his “Gif-iti.” He creates some amazing stuff, including the Rockin’ Rolls posted here.

From the Utoobage:
Pink Floyd performing at the ancient Roman amphitheatre in Pompeii , Italy. The main footage in and around the amphitheatre was filmed over four days in October 1971, using the band’s regular touring equipment, including studio-quality 24-track tape recorders.”

Kinda spacy trippy stuff for this 3-day weekend, and if you’re headed out, be sure to drive fast. The less time on the road reduces the odds of an accident. See you back here tomorrow.

Saturday Matinee – Pupsi, Best Coast & Clarence Gatemouth Brown

All Star (Smashmouth cover) by Pupsi & The Melons. Watch the carving & tuning process, or jump to 1:44 for the song.

I heard a song years ago, lost the title and the band name, and after many failed attempts I gave up looking.  After all these years I found it:
Our Deal by Best Coast. Very cool 1960s reverb retro sound; there’s a live version here.

Clarence Gatemouth Brown (1924-2005) was a rare talent, played multiple styles, and if you told him a 10 penny nail was a musical instrument, he could play it.

Guess that’ll do for a last-minute collection, so have a great weekend and we’ll see you back here tomorrow for more, you know, stuff.

Oh, and that song I’d been looking for since 2015? I found it here

What Happened To Yesterday, Mr. Soul (1966)Al “Mr. Soul” Scott was a Northern Soul singer who recorded for Mac Avery Music / Genuine Records of New York City. The song was re-released in 1967 with the label changed from  “Mr. Soul” to Al Scott as the artist;  an original 45rpm copy is very rare.

THIS is not the same Al Scott.

Saturday Matinee – Rail Yard Ghosts, The Spuny Boys & BoDeans

Railyard Ghosts are a self-described “deathgrass band” from Minnesota, but are categorized by others as a folk punk  orchestra. Their lineup is constantly changing, excepting Ms. RabbitTail Abigail and Mr. Riley Coyote. Not much more about them here.

The Spunyboys covered Ronnie Dawson‘s 1959 hit Rockin’ Bones with reverence in 2018, Villeneuve St. George, France.

BoDeans formed in 1986 in Waukesha, Wisconsin, and they’re still at it. Recorded in 1993 and performed here in 2015, Closer to Free is their biggest hit to date.

Looks like something big and nasty is comin’ round the mountain, and it’s not gonna be fun. Hope the effects don’t affect us as much as I think they will, but we’ll carry on. See you back here tomorrow and we’ll do laundry.

Saturday Matinee – The Tornados, Grits & Greens, and Eric Bibb

The Tornados had a big hit with Telstar in 1962.  Their fourth single, Robot (1963) made No. 17 in the UK charts.

Grits & Greens are new on the Mississippi scene, but they sound like veterans. Formed in 2021, members are Ryann & Jesse McGhee (vocals, guitar); Kenny Paul Mann (bass, vocals); and Jackson Bounds (drums, vocals).

Born in New York, blues singer / songwriter Eric Bibb moved to Europe in 1970 and currently resides in Helsinki, Finland, with his Finnish wife Ulrika.

Guess that’ll have to do for now because I need a nap or two. See you tomorrow, rain or shine.
